3 Different Types of Springs Used in Car Suspension Systems

This component of the car suspension system is what gives it the ability to compensate for any deformity on the road’s surface. It also provides a good support to counter for any additional weight on the vehicle without making it any weaker. The spring is also interestingly that component of the suspension system that assists it at the predetermined height.

There are mainly 3 different categories of springs currently used in vehicle suspension systems:
 
1. Coil springs - These are much similar to the regular coil spring that are inside your retractable ball pen, except these are larger and made out of extraordinarily heavy torsion bar. This torsion bar is basically coiled around the axis, hence the name. This type of spring has the ability to get compressed or expand accordingly to absorb the wheel’s motion. 

2. Leaf springs -
These are one of the oldest suspension systems. The best part about them is that they are quite simple and very easy to assemble. If you don’t believe us, you can have a look at the pictures of 18thcentury horse-drawn carriages and you’ll see these type of spring systems.

3. Torsion bars - This is a form of steel bar, where one end is connected to the vehicle’s frame while the other end is connected to the wishbone. The wishbone acts as a lever. If a bump is encountered, the wheel’s upward movement gets transmitted to the wishbone, which moves the torsion bar. This twists the torsion bar generating a spring action.
